How to Exercise Your Pet
In order to remain healthy, all animals need to exercise. Dogs need to go on runs, cats need to be able to play, and hamsters need to spin on wheels. If you’re not sure whether your pet is getting enough exercise, here are a few tips that will help you exercise your pet properly and sufficiently.
How to Exercise Your Cat
A common misconception is that cats don’t need to exercise. Unlike dogs, cats will typically not fetch balls for their owners. However, cats still need and want to be played with. In fact, not only do cats need exercise, but they need mental stimulation. Without mental stimulation and exercise, cats can develop behavior problems and get bored.
Cats are natural hunters. Therefore, you can exercise your cat by having them chase things. You can create games where your cat hunts “prey” to excite and challenge your pet. You can make an apparatus that is similar to a fishing pole. The apparatus should have streamers and feathers. You should use a string to attach other items to the apparatus.
Be sure that there are no loose objects on the apparatus that your cat could choke on. Use the apparatus to mimic the movements of a mouse, bird, or insect. Move the apparatus in jerky and short movements. To ensure your cat doesn’t lose interest in the game, you should allow the cat to win the game and catch the “prey” regularly.
You should play with your cat for about five to ten minutes at a time. Meanwhile, you can watch TV or talk on the phone while playing with your cat. This game is not only fun, but it will also help strengthen the bond between you and your cat.
How to Exercise Your Dog
If you have a fenced yard, chances are you have your dog relax and play there frequently. However, you should still make the effort to walk your dog outside the fenced yard at least once a day. Some of the benefits of going on walks with your dog include:
- Bonding time – Walking your dog is a great opportunity to create a bond between you and your part. Active time will establish trust, affection, and mutual communication. Your dog will also have opportunities to socialize with other dogs by going on walks. If your pet is a young puppy, going on walks will allow your puppy to learn about canine social interaction from older dogs.
- Exercise – In general, dogs will not run enough around a fenced yard to get a sufficient amount of exercise. Therefore, you should try to walk your dog at least a mile every day. Going on walks will allow you and your dog to burn calories, build endurance and strength, get fresh air, and discover new things in the neighborhood.
- Boredom – Dogs who are bound in the yard tend to get bored after a while. Chances are you’ve walked past fenced yards only to see the dog run to the fence line and bark, whimper, or pant. In many cases, the dog is simply bored and wants to get your attention.
